Test Retakes

For those testing in-person at a Test Center:

If you did not pass one of your GED® test subjects, you are given two subsequent retests, with no restrictions between retakes. If you fail the third or any subsequent retest, you must wait 60 days for your next attempt. Additional state requirements may apply.

For those eligible to test for the GED Online Exam:

Please visit your state's policy page and click on 'Test Retake Policies' tab to learn if you qualify for online testing and the specific retake rules in your state.

For those testing in-person at a Testing Center:

The price of the GED® test and any test retakes varies from state to state. GED Testing Service will waive its fees for retests of failed subject tests, and both states and test centers have the option to do the same if they choose. After receiving two retakes at the reduced price, the price of the test subject returns to the regular price. If you do not pass that subject again, you will receive two more retakes at the reduced rate. Click here to find your test retake price.

For those testing on the Online Exam:

Please visit your state's policy page as pricing rules vary.

No. The price for each subject is the same.  Visit your state's policy page for specific test pricing and policy rules.

Students in most states are allowed to retest for a higher score on tests they have already passed in the United States. In order to test again in a subject you've passed, you must complete an approval process. To request approval, you will need to email a brief description of why you wish to test again to [email protected]. If your request is approved, you will receive an email. That email will include instructions on how to schedule additional tests.

A waiting period between tests may apply. Visit your state's policy page for specific test pricing and policy rules. The discounted retest policy only applies to tests you did not pass.

Yes, the discount applies to two retests, taken within 12 months of your initial full-price subject test.
